The Simunye Project

Manyeleti Primary School

Manyeleti Primary School is a disadvantaged rural school located in Hoedspruit, in the Limpopo Province. The School teaches students aged 6 to 16, in Grades One to Seven. There are approximately 500 students at the school. The staff receive academic support through workshops, however, the school relies on funding and sponsorship to remain open. While the facilities at the school are inadequate to provide all the students with a reasonable education, each Simunye trip contributes more and more to the school.

Simunye 1 (September 2007)

  • Taught morning classes over three days
  • Painted a mural on outside wall to brighten up the school, which also included the school motto and a logo
  • Repainted all classrooms & the staff room.
  • Cleaned out storage, distributing the good resources to students and disposing of old, used and irrelevant materials
  • Reorganised classrooms
  • Provided correctly sized furniture for all classrooms, so that each student would have a desk and chair which was the correct size for their age and class so that furniture in all classrooms were uniform
  • Older Grade Seven students painted the watertanks
  • Students were taught about saving water and encouraged to place a bucket under the outdoor tap which the older students then emptied over the vegie patch

Repairs on the school were carried out, including tidying the classrooms, patching holes in the floor and fixing student desks. Additionally, a netball ring was erected outside. The biggest project undertaken at Manyeleti was setting up a library to encourage further education for the students. Classes and outdoor activities were also organised for the time that Simunye visited Manyeleti.

  • Activities and classes run

Simunye 3 (April 2010)
